The Department of Anesthesia at IU School of Medicine provides exceptional patient care and outstanding resident education. With nationally and internationally recognized faculty, strong residency training, and the resources of a large and well-funded research university, the department is poised to offer a robust clinical experience for learners and state of the art care for patients.

The IU School of Medicine Anesthesia department provides the setting for a superb anesthesiology training experience. For residents interested in pursuing an academic career, the department offers research opportunities with established investigators in both basic and clinical science. Research efforts are expanding the boundaries of medical knowledge and department faculty members regularly contribute work to medical journals in basic science, clinical anesthesiology, surgery and critical care.

Education

Faculty educators of the IU School of Medicine Department of Anesthesia train Masters students, medical students, residents and fellows in a broad range of anesthesia practice. Fellowships are offered in pediatric anesthesia and pediatric cardiac anesthesia.

Robert G. Presson, Jr., MD, FASA

Robert K. Stoelting Professor Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics

I have worked as a pediatric anesthesiologist and intensivist at Riley Children’s Hospital since joining the faculty in 1987 and was appointed Chair of the Department from 2012 to 2020. Our department is known for our high standard of clinical care and the excellence of our training programs. As an investigator of the pulmonary circulation, I understand the importance of the research mission and have worked to expand the scope of scholarly work during my tenure. We are on a trajectory to be one of the top Departments of Anesthesia in the country.

Jennifer L. Stewart, DO

I have worked as a faculty anesthesiologist at University Hospital since graduating from residency in 2013. After obtaining my undergraduate degree at Indiana University, I attended medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, FL. I completed my anesthesiology residency training here at Indiana University School of Medicine, where I also served as Chief Resident. In 2018, I was honored to be selected as the Residency Program Director. My goal as the Program Director is to ensure our residents have the most fulfilling experience possible while also preparing them to be experts in the field of anesthesiology. I am proud to be a part of an amazing department.

Diverse Clinical Experience

The IU School of Medicine—Indianapolis campus provides a uniquely robust clinical environment for learners in anesthesia, who complete rotations at five tertiary-care hospitals, including IU Health University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Eskenazi Hospital, the Roudebush VA Medical Center and Riley Hospital for Children. This rich learning environment prepares learners for a wide range of practice by offering broad diversity of illness, unique systems of care, and patients of all socioeconomic groups.

Graduate Medical Education Programs

The Department of Anesthesia offers a large residency program with 26 learners in each of the three Clinical Anesthesia years. Four categorical positions are offered with training in the clinical base year and the three clinical anesthesia years. Residents with advanced positions join the program for three Clinical Anesthesia years after completing a clinical base year with a different program.

The department also offers fellowships in pediatric anesthesia and pediatric cardiac anesthesia at Riley Hospital for Children. In addition, a one-year dental anesthesia fellowship is available for graduates of ADA-accredited dental schools. The department offers an Anesthesiologist Assistant program, in which students work toward a Master of Science in Anesthesia degree.

The Department of Anesthesia will host a virtual booth at the Region 5 Medical Education Conference (RMEC) for the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) ‘Changing Lanes: Adapting to a New Normal’ on October 23-25, 2020.
